15th Century Opus Anglicanum Cope

A rare and exceptional 15th century Opus Anglicanum crimson velvet cope finely embroidered in silver and gilt threads. The center with the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with Seraphim standing on wheels, the ground embellished with fleur de lis, thistles and lilies connected by scrolling tendrils and embellished with gilt metal spangles. Retaining original Orphreys depicting Prophets and Saints in brilliant coloured silks standing within gothic architectural niches. The hood bearing the image of God the Father. With a narrow outer border of contemporary cut green velvet, the whole further embellished with narrow velvet borders applied with colourful 17th century 'slips' of flowers, fruits, insects and dolphins. A remarkable survivor of pre-reformation England this cope made in London is in unfaded condition. Formerly in the renowned Berger Collection and closely related to the Vatican, St Gallon, Cologne, Stockholm, Edinburgh, Utrecht, Allerton, Caughton Court, Birmingham, St Dunstan, V & A and Art Instituted of Chicago Copes.
